Reconstruction of Craniomaxillofacial Defects With Individualized PEEK Implant: Innovative Approach

Functional reconstruction of large-size mandibular continuity defect is still a major challenge in the Craniomaxillofacial surgery due to the common unsatisfaction and various complications. These Maxillofacial defects can be the results of severe trauma, congenital malformations, infections and radical surgical resections of tumors.

Despite that now, several innovative approaches are being utilized in purpose to restore functions and improve aesthetic, postoperative complications are common and long-term fellow-up is not very often promising. Hence, surgeons in close collaboration with biotechnologists, scientists strongly worked to overcome these obstacles. Currently, several studies talk about patient's specific Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants. In addition to Microsurgical free flaps, stem cells use in bone regeneration, individualized titanium mesh and other reconstructive methods, PEEK which is a semicrystalline polyaromatic linear polymer biomaterial have shown an excellent combination of strength, stiffness, durability, and environmental resistance when combined clinically with free flap transfer in maxillofacial reconstruction.

Literature reported than patient's specific PEEK implants use in craniofacial reconstruction for 24 patients reported reliable outcomes and improved fellow-up results. In addition, infection, rejection, bone resorption and other complications rate was significantly decreased.
